Wins Innovation Award
SHAWANO, Wisconsin — A new program released by Genex Cooperative, Inc. in September has earned an innovation award from Dairy Herd Management. The program, Sort-Gate, was announced as an innovation award winner during a reception at World Dairy Expo.
Sort-Gate helps producers define which dairy cows and heifers are appropriate for specific breeding strategies. Utilizing pedigree information and genomic data, Sort-Gate ranks females by the Ideal Commercial Cow (ICC$) index, Lifetime Net Merit (LNM$) or a dairy producer’s custom index. Producers can use that ranking to determine which females should be bred to GenChoice™ sexed semen, conventional dairy semen or beef semen.
“Genex led the industry with the development Calf Math™, a calculator to define a dairy’s breeding strategy based on herd performance and goals for the future,” states Kristi Fiedler, Genex Associate Vice President of Technical Services. “That was followed by Genex being the first artificial insemination company to offer Breeding to Feeding™, which adds value to bull calves. Sort-Gate is a natural fit alongside these innovations and is the final step in helping producers create strategic dairy breeding programs.”
